Supporting An Equitable Presidency
We at Disabled People & Carers for Connolly have established to offer our full support to Catherine Connolly in her journey towards the Áras.
Catherine Connolly has consistently been an ally to our community in our search for not only equality, but equitable participation in society. Every issue, whether it is housing, climate, neutrality, or the ongoing genocides in Palestine, Sudan and Congo are disability issues; and Catherine is the only candidate who can see the value of disabled inclusion in these discussions.
In 2023, Catherine stood alongside us when opposing the Government’s harmful and ableist attempts at introducing the Green Paper on Disability. While the government tried to copy and import a policy directly from the UK Tory establishment, Catherine was steadfast in her support of the disabled communities advocacy; together, we defeated a policy that would have left a significant portion of us in deeper poverty than we already are.
As we continue this fight, Catherine stands with us in our campaign to scrap means testing for both Carer’s Allowance and disability payments, recognising that financial support is a right, not a conditional privilege. Alongside the dedicated activism of the Scrap the Green Paper Coalition, Catherine stood against furthering austerity measures against disabled people. Catherine is also a steadfast supporter of Adult Safeguarding Legislation, aimed at keeping disabled adults safe from exploitation and abuse.
While establishment forces consistently exclude disabled voices as well as the voices of carers, Catherine has always been at the forefront of raising our communities struggles and instead of advocating FOR us, she advocates with us.
Catherine also stood alongside disabled people and carers in calling for a No vote in the Care Referendum, which would have provided no enforceable rights to carers in this country and would have disproportionately affected the disabled community. Catherine supported our communities without speaking over us, and saw it for what it was; a cynical attempt by the Government to exclude us.
Catherine herself has said that the system around Assessment of Needs for autistic children is collapsing and in breach of the law, and that means testing of carers should be abolished. These are all issues that the disabled and caring communities have been raising for years; and she is the only candidate in the race who represents our interests.
A vote for Catherine Connolly is a vote for a candidate who listens, who engages, and who is committed to advocating for disabled people and carers. She does not treat disability as a matter of charity but as a matter of human rights.
A vote for Catherine Connolly is a vote for an equitable stake in democracy for all citizens.
