Presidential candidate and Independent TD Catherine Connolly has responded to comments made by Heather Humphreys on Claire Byrne Live today about the recent care referendums.

Connolly said:

“The Irish people understood the referendums. They made their decision with clarity and conviction - and that decision must be respected. It is not for former Ministers to question the wisdom of the electorate.”

She added:

“What the vote revealed was not confusion, but a deep sense that the proposals put forward did not go far enough in recognising care or protecting carers. People were clear in their rejection, and it is now the responsibility of government to reflect and to learn.”

Catherine Connolly said that any future change must be rooted in meaningful dialogue and respect:

“If we are serious about valuing care, then constitutional change must be matched by real supports for carers, for families, and for all who depend on care. That is what the people are asking for.”
