Independent Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly TD has said that her vision for the Presidency is one that belongs to all the people of Ireland - north and south - rooted in respect, dialogue and inclusion.
“The Good Friday Agreement gave us a peaceful and democratic framework for how change can happen on this island,” Catherine said. It recognises the right of the people, north and south, to determine our constitutional future by consent. That right must never be denied or delayed - but it must be prepared for with care, understanding and honesty.”
Catherine said her Presidency would be one that actively fosters dialogue and inclusion, helping to break down barriers and deepen understanding betweeb traditions.
“A united Ireland must also be a shared Ireland - one that cherishes every person, whether they identify as nationalist, unionist or neither. We share a common home, a common history and a common future. Our challenge now is to build the understanding and respect that will allow us to move forward together.
As President, I will use the soft power and moral authority of the office to bring people together from all parts of our island. I will visit communities in the North regularly, meet civic groups, schools, and cultural organisations, and open the doors of Áras an Uachtaráin to all those who call this island home.”
Catherine reiterated her belief that people in the North should have the right to vote in future Presidential elections, saying:
“If the Presidency is to belong to all the people of Ireland, then all citizens should have a voice in choosing their President. The Constitutional Convention recommended this over a decade ago. It is time to act on that recommendation.”
She said her approach to unity would be guided by the values of dialogue, equality, and shared humanity:
“My vision is of a new Ireland - one that is inclusive, progressive, creative and fair. It is not about victory for one side, but partnership between all. I want to use the Presidency to encourage inclusive discussion about the future – to create space for people to speak, listen and imagine together.
“That is how we will shape the new Ireland - through respect, compassion, and a belief that what unites us is stronger than what divides us.”
Catherine said that Ireland stands at a historic moment of change, and that leadership and courage will be needed in the years ahead:
“A new generation is coming of age in the North - young, vibrant, confident, and ready to build a shared future. They are leading in the arts, in language, in community life. Many look to the South for inclusion, respect and leadership. We cannot let them down.
“As President, I will ensure the Presidency reflects all that we share - our culture, our compassion, our common humanity.
“The next chapter of the Irish story will be written together - and I will do all in my power to help bring that future into being.”
