Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly TD is in Tallaght today as part of her campaign theme of “Community”, meeting with local individuals, volunteers and organisations providing vital services to people and families across the area.

Speaking ahead of her visit, Catherine Connolly said:

“The word meitheal embodies one of the finest traditions of Irish life - neighbours and communities coming together to help one another.

“That spirit is alive and well across Ireland today, from youth clubs to carers’ groups, women’s networks, and community development organisations and those working with people suffering disadvantage and marginalisation. These groups are the backbone of our society.

“Every day, voluntary and community organisations step in where the state too often falls short - providing essential supports to those experiencing poverty, isolation, addiction, or homelessness. Their work changes lives, and it deserves far greater recognition and investment.”

Catherine said that one of her priorities as President would be to shine a national spotlight on the contribution of community organisations:

“As President, I would ensure that the Áras is a welcoming place for the people who hold our communities together - the volunteers, the advocates, the organisers, the carers.

“I will invite community groups from every corner of Ireland to the Áras to celebrate their work, to hear their voices, and to ensure that their stories are part of the national conversation.

“A strong community is the foundation of a fair society. The spirit of an meitheal - of solidarity, cooperation, and care - must guide us as we face the challenges ahead, from housing and health to social justice and inclusion.”
